Katya Balen visited Cokethorpe school and Swallows Class went along too. She talked about her writing craft and some assumptions made about how authors work. The children played two truths and a lie to practise creating a believable, fictional world and they plenty of questions about Katya’s inspirations. During our workshop, Swallows tried a bit of automatic writing (two minutes of constant writing, no matter what comes out) which they really took to and enjoyed the random writing it created. Finally, everyone was given a sherbet lemon and wrote a description of what it would be like to eat one for the first time. They were confident and eager to read out their work, which was brilliant and creative. We had three of her books signed and they are now flying off the shelves!
