At Combe Primary School we feel it is important to celebrate cultural diversity, which embrace our core values. In KS1, Chinese New Year has been celebrated as part of our Big Question ‘Where in the World Would You Like to Go?’. We embarked upon our learning through the story of the Great Race, which forms the zodiac. The children have been inspired through drama, hot seating and decision making to learn the story. Excellent pieces of writing and art work followed. The children have made beautiful Chinese lanterns, Chinese scrolls of their names and painted some magnificent pictures of animals depicted in the story. Moreover the children learnt to write Chinese numbers, and used these to solve multiplication facts! Of course no Chinese New Year celebration would be complete without food tasting, sharing fortunes and discussing qualities of friendship that were handed out in red envelopes.
